Life is a mystery. E. Morin states this when he once said "Who
am I?" Maybe you've never even asked yourself this question. You might think you
already know who you are. Unfortunately, however, it's likely that you don't
know who you are at all. And if you don't know your real identity, you're in
trouble. You'll spend your life in a kind of dream state—you'll falsely identify
yourself as something or someone you aren't. Then, on the basis of this false
identification, you'll determine the goals of your life and the purpose of your
existence. You use these goals to gauge whether you are making "progress" in
life, whether you are a "success." And you are aided and abetted in this
delusion by a complex network of relationships with other dreamers. Of course,
at death (and sometimes before), the whole thing turns into a nightmare
The
anguish of death hangs over and leads the human spirit to wonder about the
mysteries of existence, man’s destiny, life, the world."
The choices we make are based on our identity, but at the same time every choice we make determine who we are. We are who we create ourselves to be. Everything we do and every decision we make contributes to who we are. I always find myself questioning who i am, who i am becoming. I know who i am by the choices i have made throught my life. I know who i am through the good decisions and bad decision i have made. I also think about what decesions and choices i will make in the future. These decisions i made, and are making, are molding me into my own person and the person other people see.

ReplyDeleteHow existentialist! And yet fitting for an athlete; a person cannot reach their full potential until they identify who they are. Athletes must know their strengths and weaknesses, and make decisions that compliment those strengths...of course, I'm speaking in a hypothetical sense. We all know that our decisions are not controlled by us, but the all-mighty Matrix 0.0
ReplyDeleteI loved it when you said that people are molded by the decisions they make. I agree, because people can tell what kind a person someone is, by watching their daily conduct. (If you see a guy stealing money,it is hard to deem him as an honest person). You seem have a strong sense of who you are, and it is evident in you post. Great job :)
ReplyDeleteI agree, people are shaped by their decisions, good or bad, but who is to say what is a good decision and what is a bad decision? This is determined by the eye of the decision maker. Someone may do something and truly believe that it is a good decision while the person next to them may disagree. Therefor people base their identity on their morals. -good piece, really gets you thinking.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I believe people are shaped by their decisions. I liked the way you sort of self reflected at the end and I loved the quote. The only thing I think you should fix is that you didn’t capitalize the I’s in the second paragraph.
ReplyDeleteMost people are shaped by other peoples decisions, like there parents, so it becomes really hard to find who you truly are.
I like your approach to this topic, and I especially enjoyed the transition from a dream-state to nightmares. The persona that we portray ourselves as greatly influences the choices we make and the consequences that follow. Constantly employing the Socratic method to our lives could aid us in keeping insight of who, what, and where we are in the moment and what could result from our decisions.
